Conditions That Vision Therapy Can Treat

Vision therapy involves different activities or eye exercises that an optometrist teaches to help your visual system reach its fullest potential. Vision therapy is customized based on a patient's needs and can sometimes be adjusted for further improvement to your vision.

Different vision screening tests miss most eye conditions that require vision therapy. However, a comprehensive vision examination at Saline Optometry and Chelsea Eyeglass Co. can check various aspects of your visual skills, vision, and eye health. This way, you'll never have to struggle with an eye condition that goes undiagnosed.

Who Requires Vision Therapy

Many of the patients in need of vision therapy have different visual challenges. Here are a few of note:

Learning Related Difficulties: You may need vision therapy if you lack the required visual skills for reading and writing. This may include difficulty focusing properly or controlling your eye movement.

Stress-Induced Vision Challenges: If your work demands that you sit behind a computer for long hours, you're likely to experience headaches, eyestrain, and other vision challenges. A few of these eye conditions can be corrected by vision therapy.

Conditions that Requires Visual Rehabilitation: Different health conditions such as trauma or neurological disorders can affect your vision. Just like you make appointments with an occupational or physical therapist, there's also a need to consult a vision therapist.

Conditions That Can Be Corrected Using Visual Therapy

There are various eye conditions that our facility treats with vision therapy. Here's an overview of a few you should know:

Lazy Eye

Also known as Amblyopia, this is a condition that develops when one of your eyes fails to achieve normal visual acuity. This sometimes causes blurry vision in the affected eye, even after wearing corrective eyeglasses. Many patients with this condition find it difficult to read. We diagnose lazy eye through a comprehensive eye exam that assesses visual skills and visual acuity.

Our vision therapy for lazy eye involves training the eyes to work together for comfortable and clear vision. Our vision program includes fixation (visual gaze), pursuits (eye-tracking) and stereopsis (3-D vision).

Convergence Insufficiency

This is a vision condition that affects your eye muscle coordination. A patient with this condition finds it difficult to maintain clear and comfortable vision. Some of the common symptoms include difficulty reading, eye strain, and headaches. If a patient presents with this condition, our vision therapy session may involve training the patient’s eyes to work together for better depth perception.

In such cases, vision therapy aims to stimulate communication between the eyes and brain.
