How We Diagnose Cataracts
Cataracts are found during comprehensive eye exams by an optometrist when you go for glasses or contacts and are dealt with by an ophthalmologist. It is a clouding of the lens, and your vision becomes blurry. At Saline Optometry and Chelsea Eyeglass Co of Saline, MI, we know it can be confusing to understand eye conditions and their diagnosis, so we are here to guide you every step of the way.
Diagnosing Cataracts
Several different eye tests are done to determine cataracts. Such as:
- Visual acuity tests – eyes are tested to see how you read a series of letters.
- Retinal exam – after dilating the eyes, a lamp is used to look at the back of your eye.
- Slit-lamp exam – magnifies the structures in the eye with intense light to see even a small abnormality.
- Applanation tonometry – measures the pressure that is inside the eye.
These visual tests, in combination, can find small damage and serious problems, helping the doctor see what is going on and what can be done to help your vision.
Treating Cataracts
Many times, cataract treatment will be on a watch-and-see basis, as they may not impose too much on vision or need immediate treatment. However, treating a cataract in the early stages means a shorter surgery and a quicker recovery. You do not have to go through the vision impairment or the blindness that can come with a mature cataract.
Cataract surgery is the last step if there isn’t a way to clear the vision. This is done on an outpatient basis and with local anesthetic. There is a small risk of bleeding and infection, but it is generally safe for everyone. As the eye doctor for your specific risk factors. There will be aftercare instructions, and you will need someone to drive you home afterward. After recovery, your vision should be back to where it was before the cataract. You'll need to stay on top of your vision screenings, even after the cataract has been removed.
