Glaucoma

When to Visit Our Eye Doctor for Glaucoma Screening

The optic nerve sends visual information the eye collects to the brain for good vision. The resulting damage to the optic nerve is often associated with unusually high eye pressure. However, glaucoma can still occur even with normal pressure in the eye. At Saline Optometry and Chelsea Eyeglasses Co. in Chelsea, MI, and Saline, MI, we offer glaucoma screening, among other eye care services.

Who Is at the Highest Risk of Developing Glaucoma?

This eye complication tends to run in families. If you have a parent with glaucoma, you are more likely to develop it. Glaucoma can happen at any age but is more prevalent in older adults. If left unchecked, the condition can lead to permanent vision loss and even total blindness within a couple of years. Glaucoma is among the top causes of blindness in people over 60.

If you are from a family with a history of the ailment or are over 60 years old, you must visit an optometrist for glaucoma screening at least once every two years. You should also visit if you have diabetes, poor vision, hypertension, thin corneas, or take steroids.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Some common symptoms of glaucoma are:

  • Eye pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye redness
  • Halos around lights

For children, you might notice:

  • Worsening nearsightedness
  • Dull or cloudy eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

You should visit an eye doctor for an eye exam when you develop any of these symptoms.

Glaucoma Treatment

If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, the treatments our optometrist will recommend include the following listed below:

  • Eye Drops - These can lower eye pressure by reducing the creation of fluid in the eye or maximizing the outflow of fluids.
  • Oral Medication - Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and beta blockers are commonly used for glaucoma treatment. These drugs increase fluid outflow or reduce fluid creation in the eye to minimize eye pressure.
  • Laser Surgery - If affected by open-angle glaucoma, the surgery can maximize fluid outflow from the eyes. If you have angle closure glaucoma, it will stop fluid blockage and open the drainage area.
